In the play Othello, Iago sets up Michael Cassio by forcing him to drink.  Cassio in an alcoholic and he was trying to stay away from drinking, so that he wouldn't get drunk and be reckless.  Iago continued to try to get Cassio to take a drink, and he eventually did.  Cassio became drunk and it inhibited him, and he eventually fought Montano, and killed him, and that murder got him fired from his job as Lieutenant.

Comparing Iago to John Spano

In this post I will compare the villainous figure in Othello, Iago, to a now villainous figure in New York sports history, and on Long Island, John Spano.  Both of these people were examples of frauds, who showed themselves to people as something that was good, when in reality they were actually being deceitful, and were someone that they were not showing themselves to be.

In this post, I will discuss the relationship between two great pairings, that at once looked amazing, but then had a time when they started to slide, and eventually they were separated.  In Othello, this wonderful pairing would be the marriage between Othello and Desdemona.  In sports, the greatest pairing out there, that was separated by drama and off and on the court issues, would be the pairing of Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal when they played together for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Ultimate Betrayal

In this post, rather than comparing a scene of Othello to a sports story, I will compare probably the most prominent theme of Othello to an event that occurred that had this theme on full display.  When reading Othello, there is a recurring feeling of betrayal that you get while reading.  Iago constantly betrays people, and while it was mainly Othello and his marriage, he also betrayed Michael Cassio, and Rodrigo, and his wife Emilia.

In Act One, Scene One of Othello, there is one main story and theme that can be easily related to the story that is portrayed in the Sports Movie, "Remember the Titans."  Remember the Titans was a movie that came out in the year 2000, and was based on a true story.  Even though there were many fictional parts of the story, it is still a viable story to compare because this movie will go down as one of the greatest sports movies of all time, and is somewhat based upon an actual event. Now, while not all of the story was true, it was based upon the integration of the T.C. Williams High School football team, in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971.
